How Northside Regional Medical Center closed

Steward Health Care announced the closure on August 15, 2018, and the hospital shut at 12:01 a.m. on September 20, 2018. Here is the sequence of events, and what happened to the building afterward.

The final five weeks: 2018

Aug 15

Closure announced. Steward says patient numbers fell 71% in a decade and files a state layoff notice listing 388 jobs. What Steward announced

Days later

Revised notice: 468 jobs. Steward files an updated notice raising the number of positions eliminated by 80.

Aug 23 & Sep 6

Job fairs on site. Steward holds two job fairs to place Northside staff at its other hospitals and practices.

Sep 17

ER and maternity stop. The emergency department stops accepting ambulances and admissions, and labor and delivery stops taking patients.

Sep 19

Last inpatients leave. Remaining patients are transferred to nearby hospitals or discharged.

Sep 20

Hospital closes at 12:01 a.m. Northside Regional Medical Center ends operations after 89 years.

Oct 14

Final pay date. Steward said employees would be paid through this date, plus accrued benefits.

After the hospital closed

2018–2024

Clinics stay in the building. A family practice clinic, outpatient lab, radiology, mammography and sleep studies continue at 500 Gypsy Lane under Steward.

Sep 2024

Last services end. During Steward's bankruptcy, the remaining services in the building close; the state notice lists 9 staff.

Mar 2025

More Steward-era hospitals close. Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland, sold by Steward to Insight, shut down.

Jan 2026

Licenses surrendered. Insight surrenders the operating licenses for Trumbull Regional and Hillside, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

Before the closure

1929

Northside Hospital opens on Gypsy Lane, run by the Youngstown Hospital Association.

1997

Forum Health forms. Northside merges with Tod Children's Hospital and Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

2009–2011

Bankruptcy and sale. Forum Health files for bankruptcy; Community Health Systems buys its hospitals and renames the system ValleyCare Health System of Ohio.

2013

$20 million renovation. The building gains 30,000 square feet and 28,000 square feet are refurbished, including new emergency rooms.

May 2017

Steward takes over. Steward Health Care buys Northside and the other ValleyCare hospitals from Community Health Systems.
